Can Dogs Get Swine Flu?
They call it H3N8. This was originally an equine flu that some how jumped to dogs.

Back in 2004 at a greyhound race track in Florida some of the dogs started coming down with what was thought to be a respiratory infection. Only, they didn't get better, the respiratory symptoms can last up to a month. Then many of the dogs started to die. Tissue and blood samples were sent off to be evaluated and that is when they found that they were dealing with a flu that could now effect dogs.

It begins sounding like kennel cough. Since many of the dogs that catch the flu do so because they frequent public dog spots it makes sense to assume that is what it is and not seek further medical treatment. Additional symptoms include fever, loss of appetite, lethargy and a respiratory infection. The rate of death is about 1-5%.

In the past 5 years there have been confirmed cases in 30 states. The virus pops up out of nowhere so it seems and spreads, then fades away. Although no humans have fallen ill they are able to carry the virus from dog to dog. It is recommended, just like you would with a child, if your dog does not feel well, avoid the dog park, kennels and doggie day cares. Dogs are very susceptible to this virus because they don't know to not stick their noses into places that could contain germs. They don't have hands to wash or tissues to sneeze into.

Another thing to worry about is this virus eventually mutating into a disease that could get humans sick, especially since this strand has already proven itself capable to mutate and jump species. They are trying to work up a vaccine for dogs to try to wipe out this strand before it can strengthen and multiply. Until then, you have to have your radar up, if your out with your dog and see a dog that looks ill, take your pet home for the day. Better safe than sorry on this one!
